Different Types of Weeds to be Controlled in Your Yard

Successful control of lawn weeds begins with education. To control the weeds in your grass, we need to understand them first. So what do you need to know? First, it all starts with understanding the three main types of weeds. There are broadleaf weeds, sedges, and grassy weeds.

Broadleaf weeds in a lawn look just how they’re named. They have broad leaves. Most of the easy to control weeds are broadleaf weeds (dandelions, henbit, chickweed, plantain.) Some of the tougher broadleaf weeds to control in a residential lawn would be clover or violet. However, broadleaf weeds are generally the easiest to get under control, so in a previously neglected lawn, that is the first goal of our treatment services.

Broadleaf weed controls are typically applied in lower concentrations because all of our trees and shrubs in Springfield and surrounding areas are considered large broadleaf plants and are susceptible to chemical damage when applied incorrectly.

Sedges are a little tougher to identify and control than our broadleaf weeds. However, with proper lawn seeding practices and today’s chemical control options, nutsedge weeds are still a fairly easy battle to win in the lawn. Yellow nutsedge is the most common variety of sedge in Springfield, Missouri. It can be identified by it’s triangular shaped stem and light green color. It also tends to grow a little faster and taller than fescue. If you let it grow to seed, it will develop some pretty large seed heads. Our licensed pesticide applicators will identify and control sedge infestations once our program has the broadleaf weeds under control.

Grassy weeds common to Springfield are crabgrass, foxtail, goose grass, the dreaded bermuda grass, and more. Grassy weeds are the toughest to control because they are so closely related to the desired turf grasses in our area: tall fescue and blue grass. We use pre-emergent weed control products to stop the spread of crabgrass and other grassy weeds before they ever start growing. Since the winter weather tends to kill off most grassy weeds, pre-emergent weed control is a quite effective method of control.

Selective Weed Control Products vs. Non-selective Weed Control Products

One of the most important distinctions when controlling the weeds in your lawn is the use of selective and non-selective herbicides.

Selective herbicides only kill certain types of weeds, while leaving others unharmed. This is how we can get away with spraying all of the grass in the yard and only killing the weeds. The applied herbicide is selecting only to kill the weeds. All of our weed control programs utilize selective herbicides, with the exception of specific lawns infested with our native bermuda grass.

Sometimes lawns are too far gone to warrant the use of selective herbicides. In the event of such a situation, a non-selective chemical control could be utilized. Usually these types of herbicides are only applied in selected areas, but can be used to essentially “start your lawn over.” The most common non-selective herbicides on the market are glyphosate products, better known to the public as “Round-Up.”
